MUSIC

Title: JUNIOR HIGH CHOIR

PREREQUISITE: Student in 7th or 8th grade.

DESCRIPTION: Junior High Choir is a performance class.  There are several performing opportunities over the course of the year - these will be listed on the syllabus handed out at the beginning of the year.  Students will learn to sing correctly, using healthy singing techniques.  Students will learn to work in a team.  Students will learn to sing multiple part harmony.  Students will be introduced to music from around the world, which may result in experiencing new languages.  On top of singing, we will continue to expand upon basic music theory learned throughout K-6 general music.  To ensure the instructor has time to assess individual voices more closely, voice lessons will be required of all choir members.

Title: CONCERT CHOIR

PREREQUISITE: Students in grades 9-12

DESCRIPTION: Concert Choir is a performance class.  There will be several performing opportunities throughout the year - these will be listed on the syllabus handed out at the beginning of the year.  These opportunities include Concerts as well as a Large Group contest held in the Spring.  Students will learn to sing and better read the printed page of music.  Students will learn to work in a team.  Students will perform many different types of music.  This may include learning music from different musical eras, to learning music from other cultures around the world.  As a result, students may also experience new languages through learning their music.  To ensure the instructor has time to assess individual voices more closely, voice lessons will be required of all choir members.  Solo and ensemble contest and performance opportunities, trips, and festival choirs are all extra curricular opportunities.

Title: JUNIOR HIGH BAND

PREREQUISITES: Student in 7th or 8th grade. At least two years of study on a band instrument and/ or audition with instructor.

DESCRIPTION:  This course focuses on learning and preparing music of medium easy to intermediate difficulty for performance.  Students will learn the fundamentals of music theory and music history.  Students will take private or group lessons on their instruments.  Students are required to meet practice requirements outside of the classroom.  Students are required to perform in two evening concerts, and several events during the school day.  Students must realize that this class is a year-long commitment.

ORGANIZATION:   Year long


Title: CONCERT WIND ENSEMBLE

PREREQUISITES: Students in grades 9-12. At least four years of study on a band instrument and/or audition with instructor.

DESCRIPTION:  This course focuses on learning and preparing music of medium to high difficulty for performance.  Students will learn the fundamentals of music theory and music history and strive for higher levels of musicianship in their ensemble and individual playing.  Students will take private or group lessons on their instruments.  Students are required to perform at evening concerts and pep band events.  Students are required to perform at several events during the school day.  A list of performance dates will be handed out on the first day of class.  Optional participation in the Solo/Ensemble Contest is encouraged.   Students must realize this is a year-long commitment.

Title: GENERAL MUSIC 7-8

PREREQUISITES: None.

DESCRIPTION:   This course is for 7-8th grade students who are not involved in Band or Choir.  Students will use the textbook MUSIC! ITS ROLE AND IMPORTANCE IN OUR LIVES and other resources to learn about music history, terminology,  forms, dance, various cultures, etc.   Students will study Music Theory to learn how to read, write, and better understand music, and perform it on various instruments and their voices.  Grades will be earned through assignments, projects, written tests, playing tests, and participation.
