My name is Darren Kern.
I am very proud to write this message as the Superintendent/PK-6 Principal here at Battle Lake Schools. I am also proud to call Battle Lake my home and I thoroughly enjoy living in this community. I have two adult children, Alex (22) and Lauren (19). Alex graduated from college in January of 2021 and is pursuing a career as an accountant. Lauren is just finishing her 2nd year of college; she is an active runner and participates on the cross country and indoor/outdoor track teams for her university. I enjoy all that the Lakes Area has to offer, including fishing, hunting, walking, and, of course, golf. We are blessed to have so many activities in the area and an abundance of outdoor activities. My big passion outside of my professional life is that I am an avid University of Minnesota sports fan, specifically of football, men’s basketball, women’s basketball, and women’s soccer. If I am not enjoying the outdoors, I am likely attending a game or watching one on TV. In my 28th year as an educator, I find myself more passionate than ever about meeting the needs of our students and families. I believe very strongly that all students can achieve at high levels; the path taken is different for every student, but together we can get there. Battle Lake School has a proud tradition of excellence and I am committed to providing an excellent education to our students in the future. I also want to make sure that we provide many opportunities for our students as they navigate toward graduation. Part of that process is helping students choose a path toward a career or post-secondary education that works for them. I am proud of the Battle Lake School and proud to be one of its leaders. I want to make sure that everyone involved with our school feels that sense of pride. We are focused on a positive mindset and believe we can overcome any obstacle. As I talk with alumni and community members, I hear often how important the school is to the community. While I agree that the school is an important part of the community, you cannot underestimate how important this wonderful community is to our school. Together, we make Battle Lake a strong and fabulous place to live and work. My door is always open and I am just a phone call away. I enjoy hearing from parents and community members regarding what we do well, but also ways we can continue to improve, as I am committed to excellence in education. Again, I am very proud to live and work here. Battle Lake is simply a wonderful place to be.
